Noesis Studio Released as Free Game Dev Tool
Noesis, the company behind the UI of multiple popular games by Microsoft, Nintendo and other top companies, has released a free game dev tool, Noesis Studio, which levels the playing field between indie developers and AAA studios.
Gamers know if something they’re playing has had a decent amount of polish, and one clear indication of this is the quality of the UI. This is especially important when it comes to a game that has to communicate a lot of information in as succinct a way as possible, such as in contemporary turn-based RPGS like Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Stone of Madness – both of which use Noesis.
“Within Studio you’ll find an extensive collection of built-in, highly intuitive tools, aimed to empower designers and developers alike to create entire, full-functional interfaces without having to write a single line of code,” said Dorian Stewart, UI Design Director, in a video recently posted to Noesis’ X (Twitter) account.
Familiar Interface
Noesis Studio operates on a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get-principle, and everything mocked-up in the program appears in-game in exactly the same way, without loss of quality.
The main Studio interface will look familiar to anyone who’s used design software before, as there’s a timeline, rearrangeable windows, and panel layout templates and input button styles. Studio’s modular design even allows for deep customization, such as adding textures and replacing the existing renderer.
Baby Steps
Noesis Studio might look dense, especially to users who don’t typically use other design software, but it also comes with a wealth of online learning resources. Whether unsure about how to use paths, the animation timeline, or even how to get started in the first place, Noesis has a video tutorial available.
The beta version of Noesis Studio is out now and available for use on PC.
